Dear Canada: will you recognize Algonquin land rights before your 150th birthday next year?

July 1, 2016

July 1, 2016 — Local history expert and antique restorer, Lindsay Lambert, has written a letter to Canada as the country celebrates its 149th birthday. The letter outlines the events leading to the situation in which the National Capital Commission, City of Ottawa, and Algonquin peoples find themselvlambert_smes today:

“For almost 70 years, the plan was to
reclaim the area of the Chaudière Falls and Islands as
public parkland. It is only within the past four that this
has been inverted in favour of private development,” Lambert writes.

Read the full text of the letter, with historic photographs of Chaudière Falls at this website, which tells the story of a month-long project that has involved tying cloth ribbons to the Chaudière Bridge in honour of the sacred site.
Strawberry Moon Ribbons ends today.
